Channel 4 invites ideas for funding from David Wilcox on Vimeo.
People presenting and developing ideas in sessions at 2gether08 have a chance to interest Channel 4 in supporting them through their new £50million 4IP fund.
Jon Gisby, Channel 4 Director of New Media and Technology, makes clear in an interview that groups and individuals contributing to 2gether08 are as welcome to put forward ideas as are large producers and agencies.
The aim of the innovation fund is to:
Nurture new talent. Champion new voices and fresh perspectives. Give people who can reinvent public service media the tools and resources they need to do it.
When asked why Channel 4 is sponsoring 2gether08, and introducing people to the fund, Jon said:
Channel 4 has always been about championing new ideas and talent, and we have been very good at doing that in television over the course of the last 25 years.
What we are actively exploring with 4IP is how we can extend that on to new platforms, and work with all sorts of new people that we probably haven’t been working with in the past, who are looking to make a social difference and solve interesting problems, and do that on a new platform.
We hope and believe that there are going to be lots of those sort of people at 2gether.
We want to find them, talk to them, learn from them and hopefully fund some of them to do some really interesting stuff.
Jon and others from Channel 4 will give more details of the fund on the second day of the Festival - when there will also be an opportunity for those who have been running sessions to present their ideas. His tip for those seeking support: take a look information about 4IP on the Channel 4 website, and the Next on 4 programme.

Hi Caesar - Channel 4 will be explaining more about the 4IP innovation fund at 2gether08. There is general information from Channel 4 on their commissioning process here. Hope this helps.
Thankyou,much appreciated.
I have looked and read through the parts that comply but it seems that i have to go through a production company. The companies are asking to go through an agency.I tried PACT too but they are asking for a £75 fee.
I seem to be going further and further into oblivion. Is this the right way im going?.
Hi Caesar - sorry can’t offer any specific guidance on Channel 4 commissioning policies … we are focussed here on the 2gether08 festival. However, if you can come along on one or both days you’ll see from the programme that Channel 4 will be explaining their 4IP innovation fund further.
hi i have a really good idea for channel 4 which could help issues like youth crime, knife crime in particular and gang culture. I am a teen myself and believe with the help of channel 4 we could create a tv drama that young people can relate to and the older generation can understand. There are so many young people who are very talented but are overshadowed by teen crime in the news, therefore with the help of channel 4 we can do something positive for teenagers.Think kidulthood in episodes. Thanks for the sneak peek at the power of the £50million 4IP fund at 2gether08. I’ve got ideas, and have been trying to get one in development and execution that I’d like to present to the appropriate folks. I’m registering to keep updated about the funding progress.
I have not got an idea for a new show but just a documentry that has come out that is really interesting. I think it would be great if it was ever shown on TV. The name of the documentry is zeitgeist and it is about religion and the origin of it aswell as other cool stuff. This probably is a waste of time but whoever is reading this if anyone please watch this film. You can see it on google video
Hi there,
I am the curator of the BHGM and have been collecting vintage hang gliders for the last 25 years and now have over 100 in the collection. In 2005 I made a DVD about The Yearly Years of Hang Gliding, which told the story about the early UK pioneers who built their own home made machines and lanched themselves into the skys back in early 1970’s. Recently a new filming opportunity has surfaced about a man who first invented the hang glider in Australia, in 1963, called John Dickenson. He came up with his invention by taking to a famous engineer who worked for NASA called Francis Rogallo. Francis was designing specially shaped kites which could be used to help space craft re-entry vehicles to land safely on land instead of the sea. John used the shape of one of these kites in his design and made a controllable air frame from wood, to hold the plastic sail in shape. The first machines were towed behind speedboats which allowed the skiers to literally fly straight off the water jumps! The interesting part of this story is that he has not been recognised for his invention and seems to have been forgotten, while others have since claimed that it they have invented the hang glider.
This story was relayed to me by an historian Mark Woodhams who has made contact with John (now aged 75) and has gained permission from him to rebuild the original hang glider. Mark and I are in the midst of making this unique machine and I though this would the perfect opportunity to make a film about the whole project. The problem I have is my filming equipment is not really adequate to make a professional film and I was wondering if was possible that 4ip fund could help to complete this filming project?
Kind Regards
Jason Board
Thanks for your really interesting contribution. The 4IP fund doesn’t go live until September, but you can register interest here http://www.4ip.org.uk/ and then get an alert alert when the call for ideas goes out.
